25th Hour was a college group project in 2021 where we made a website with an embedded game. In that class, we kept to a single group for the entire semester and would rotate roles every project. Because of this, I furthered my experience as a developer, designer, tester, and project leader. I can communicate with every step of the game development process and have honed my ability to change roles on a dime.
During my rotation as the digital artist, I redid our main logo and header to fit the existing astronomy-astrology theme of our site. The main assignment for this rotation was to create a browser card game, and to fit with our theme, it ended up being a tarot-inspired fortune telling game called "Constarot"— a portmanteau of constellation and tarot. I was excited to design the cards. We wanted the them to be based on constellations and give the player a fortune based on how their card matched with the computer's. Astronomy is a hobby I share with my family, so I loved the idea of being able to turn my beloved night sky into illustrations. Keeping to a simple style, I designed the cards with the constellations' mythology in mind.
Adding the swords, cups, and wands from tarot as different decks the player could choose from helped to give the player a sense of variety and agency as well as to cut back on the code necessary for drawing a card. Once the player and the computer both draw a card, a fortune appears based on the match. I, with some help of another teammate, wrote a fortune for every possible combination of cards. I played into the mythology of each card to tailor the outcome. I loved this project and everything my team did for it. I am incredibly proud of how it came out.
If you would like to play Constarot, it can be found here.
